Government Minister Eduardo del Castillo said that in addition to Zúñiga, former navy Vice Admiral Juan Arnez Salvador has been taken into custody.

“What was this group’s goal? The goal was to overturn the democratically elected authority,” del Castillo told journalists in announcing the arrests.

Late on Wednesday, Defence Minister Edmundo Novillo said “everything is now under control”. Surrounded by the new military chiefs appointed by Arce, Novillo said that Bolivia had experienced a “failed coup”.

So why did it happen?

The incident comes after months of political tensions between Arce and his one-time ally, former leftist president Evo Morales, over control of the ruling party.

Bolivia is also grappling with a severe economic crisis and has seen intensifying protests in recent months over the economy’s precipitous decline from one of the continent’s fastest-growing two decades ago to one of its most crisis-stricken.

The political turmoil in the government has thwarted efforts to turn the economy around, with Morales’ allies in Congress consistently obstructing Arce’s attempts to take on debt to relieve some of the pressure.

Zúñiga referenced that paralysis during the rebellion, telling reporters the military was tired of the infighting and was seeking “to restore democracy.”

“We are listening to the cry of the people because for many years an elite has taken control of the country,” he said, adding that politicians are “destroying the country: look at what situation we are in, what crisis they have left us in.”

Regardless, the apparent attempt to depose the sitting president seemed to lack any meaningful popular support — and even Arce’s rivals closed ranks to defend democracy and repudiate the uprising.

Zúñiga puzzlingly claimed before his arrest that Arce himself had told the general to storm the palace.

“The president told me: ‘The situation is very screwed up, very critical. It is necessary to prepare something to raise my popularity’,” Zúñiga said.

Justice Minister Iván Lima immediately denied Zúñiga’s claims, saying the general was lying in an attempt to justify his actions.

In a post on the social media platform X, Lima wrote that prosecutors will seek the maximum sentence of 15 to 20 years in prison for Zúñiga “for having attacked democracy and the Constitution”.

Following Wednesday's chaos, reports on local media showed Bolivians stocking up on food and other essentials in supermarkets, concerned about what would come next.

But addressing supporters outside the presidential palace, the country’s vice president, David Choquehuanca, vowed: "Never again will the Bolivian people permit coup attempts.”

https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/53/32/88/{{w}}x{{h}}_cmsv2_c3222a37-3c11-52fe-a852-22452fcbdef5-8533288.jpg
Bolivian The character-driven short films will inspire and amaze, as these young change-makers tell their remarkable stories.

Against the grey backdrop of a skatepark, a young woman dressed in a vibrant, puffed-out skirt and long braided hair practises kickflips and ollies. “They usually think that it is a sport for men,'' says Brenda Tinta, who has been skateboarding for the past six years.

The skateboarder is part of the Imilla Skate collective, a group of young Bolivian women who skateboard while wearing traditional clothing.

With their high bowler hats, frilly skirts and elegant demeanour, the cholas - or cholitas as they are affectionately known, may look like they have stepped out of an early 20th century period drama, but this is the traditional dress of the indigenous women of Andean Bolivia.

Pride in their origins

In the Imilla crew, the 'pollera' skirt symbolises strength and empowerment. "These clothes are not a costume. This is an identity. This is what makes them cholitas and they are proud of that," explains Imilla Skate member Huara Medina Montaño. "The chola reflects the history of her heroism for liberty and independence," she adds.

Indigenous people of the country were once socially excluded and denied access to public transportation and communal areas. Bolivia's first indigenous president, Evo Morales, gave Amerindians greater recognition after his election.

In today's world, anything is possible. Brenda explains a cholita can be a lawyer, teacher, or even a TV presenter. "Why not us? As the Imilla Skate crew, we want to show people a cholita skateboarder," she says.

Why skateboarding?

As boardsports have gained popularity over the past decade, skateboarders are well known on the streets of Sucre. "What interests me more about this sport is that it's a discipline that pulls you out of your comfort zone. It pushes you out of your limits and it helps you to lose fear," explains Brenda.

"Skating is like life itself, as even if you fail lots of times with a trick and you don't get it done the first, second or even the 20th time, you have to keep on trying. The achievement is the happiness you feel when you accomplish the trick, the same with life when you achieve an objective. It's something satisfactory for yourself," explains Estefani Morales, a member of Imilla Skate.

Skate Sisterhood

The women's passion for the sport has drawn them together. "Skating as the Imilla Skate has helped us to bond, to strengthen ties as friends, as skate mates, even as a sisterhood. We are close to each other. We don't just skate, we support each other with our problems," says Brenda.

The collective aims to inspire other young girls to skateboard. Other women have started their own crews in response to their social media campaigning.

"The mothers and grandmothers of the girls from our crew are happy with what we are doing because we are giving a twist on how women in pollera are seen. It's great to contribute to that," says Daniela Santivañez.

Cholitas are proud of their roots and they have found a way to stay modern but never lose sight of their foundations and character. They would love to see more women skating down the streets with their polleras.

SCENES shines a spotlight on youth around the world that are breaking down barriers and creating change. quadruple amputee Theo Curin on Wednesday began his challenge to swim 122 kilometers (75 miles) across the world's highest navigable lake to raise awareness of environmental pollution.

Alongside his two companions, Olympic medalist Malia Metella, 39, and Matthieu Witvoet, 27, Curin set off at 8:15 am from Copacabana on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca, some 3,800 meters above sea level.

The French trio, who will take turns to swim while the other two rest and keep warm in a boat made from recycled materials sailing alongside, hope to finish the challenge in 10 days, when they arrive in Puno, Peru.

During the journey they will drink filtered water from the lake and keep their food in reusable bags to avoid producing any rubbish.

Before they began, they received the on Wednesday began his challenge to swim 122 kilometers (75 miles) across the world's highest navigable lake to raise awareness of environmental pollution.

Before they began, they received the blessing of a local But today, over 90 have joined the squad in La Paz.

Her efforts and dedication to not just teaching the beautiful game but also promoting the values taught by sport have earned her this year's Gazprom's Football for Friendship award for her project on "Kicking out the Pandemic," which involved creative online football practices that continue despite coronavirus measures being eased.

Pozo says the award has "definitely been very important" as the academy was competing against more than 100 football schools around the world.

"We did not know that they were going to pay enough attention to a school that was only for women, so at some point, we also opened the doors to all children," she says.

"Receiving this (the award) has been a huge shock because not only has Las Superpoderosas given us a lot of strength, but also for the country to see that we can do things and that we can create things and carry out innovative projects that have an impact at an international level."

'The ball belongs to everyone'

Bolivia ranks 42 among 153 countries by the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report, fairing much better than other Latin American countries, and has equal representation in parliament.

But women and girls in Bolivia are at a high risk of gender-based violence, despite a 2013 law that sets out measures to prevent and prosecute violence against women.

And when it comes to football, the girls who train at Pozo's academy face prejudice.

"Several boys tell you that only they can play," says 14-year-old Luciana Lopez, who trains at 'Las Super Poderosas' and hopes to follow in the footsteps of her grandfather Carlos Lopez, an Argentinian football superstar.

"But I feel that it builds more confidence and more character in you by playing such a beautiful sport. I think [sport] is also good for our health and to maintain a beautiful physique for ourselves."

Pozo says girls and boys are not treated equally from the outset.

"The male is always given much more importance, the male is the strong one, the male is the one who does sports," she argues.

But she says: "Women can also play soccer, the field belongs to everyone, the ball belongs to everyone".
